How can I delete an empty partition?
An alternative would be to use Partition Magic to extend your existing partition by 4GB. This looks good stuff to me, Mark. I'm A1 positive it's empty. Or at least XP seems convinced, which is good enough for me. I have a dvd/cd-rw drive on D. Where do I get this Partition Magic? This sounds like the best solution.

This was a primary partition - that must be OK as win98 itself is in a primary partition. I tried making it bootable

In the end I deleted the new partition. I still get the boot.config and boot.ini messaged, but the system now boots and runs fine. I'll have to put the new space on another disk. You can quiet /boot.config by just touching it and making it empty. boot.ini doesn't exist, you may be thinking of boot.help,

So, I repartitioned the HP (with its 40 MB ATA drive) to match the partitions on the Linux box (with its 9MB SCSI drive), leaving all the spare space in the extended partition at the end. I figured that should be safe enough to keep the ext2 partition that I made for Linux below the 1024 limit.
